|Step #1: DEVELOPMENT
|STEP #2: REVISION
|STEP 3: THE CAREER
A manuscript evaluation is a broad overview of your draft’s strengths and weaknesses. I know what publishers, editors, and readers are looking for and in a 8-12 page letter I offer advice, encouragement, and possible solutions to help you reach your intended readership.
Is the work original? Entertaining? Enticing? Provoking?
Plot and Story Structure
Does the work have a beginning, middle and end? Are the plot and subplots clear? Is the plot–what happens–best arranged to reveal the emotional, dramatic and thematic significance of your story? If this is a nonfiction book, does the structure advance or impede the argument or conveyance of information?
Are characters memorable? Distinct? Do we care about their fate?
Do I trust your authority on the subject? Do I feel like you’ve done your research? For fiction: are character motivations believable?
Is the point of view clear? Consistent? Effective?
Does the story move? Flow? Or drag in spots?
Is the language fresh? Appropriate? Is dialogue realistic?
Are central ideas clear? Subtly conveyed with imagery and story?
Any other weaknesses in your narrative and prose
